Finance Jobs in Switzerland: How to Get Hired as an Expat (2026)
Getting a finance job in Switzerland is a different task from getting a job in Switzerland in general. The sector is large, but 2025 and 2026 brought a fall in headcount at the biggest bank, rising unemployment in banking, and a permit system that depends on where you come from.
This guide puts the 2026 numbers first, then walks through permits, who is hiring and a step-by-step plan, as of 19 October 2026.

The short version
- Banks employed 92,002 people (full-time equivalents) in Switzerland at the end of 2025, down 2,345 or 2.5% from 2024. The fall came entirely from the big banks. All other categories added jobs (SBA).
- Banking unemployment was 3.3% in December 2025, just above the economy as a whole, and 4,160 banking workers were registered unemployed (SECO, via the SBA).
- In the first half of 2026, domestic bank headcount fell 1.4% (1,216 full-time equivalents). Of the banks polled, 59.4% expect unchanged headcount for the rest of the year, 33.3% higher and 7.2% lower (SBA).
- For non-EU/EFTA hires, the Federal Council set 8,500 permits for 2026: 4,500 B and 4,000 L. A non-EU/EFTA worker can be admitted only if no suitable domestic worker or free-movement national is found (Art. 21 AIG).
- Foreign graduates of a Swiss university are admitted for six months after their studies to look for matching work (Art. 21(3) AIG).

The SBA report says the 2025 fall came entirely from the big banks, a category that has consisted of one group since UBS took over Credit Suisse in 2023. Our reading: the biggest bank is shrinking while the other categories are growing, so a search that includes cantonal, Raiffeisen, private, foreign-controlled and stock exchange banks has more openings to work with than one aimed only at UBS. The SBA text gives the direction by category but no vacancy counts, so this is a reading of its report, not a list of jobs.
2. Step 1: settle your work permit route
Permits decide whether a job offer can become a job. Article 21 of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act (AIG) sets the priority rule: foreign nationals can be admitted to work only if it is shown that no suitable domestic workers or nationals of states with a free movement agreement can be found (Fedlex, Art. 21 AIG). Domestic workers include Swiss citizens, holders of a settlement permit and holders of a residence permit that allows work.
For third-country nationals, the Federal Council fixes annual maximum numbers. On 19 November 2025 it kept them unchanged for 2026 (Federal Council):
| Group | Permits for 2026 | Used by end of September 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Third-country workers and specialists | 8,500: 4,500 B (residence) and 4,000 L (short stay) | About 52% |
| United Kingdom, separate quota | 3,500: 2,100 B and 1,400 L | 17% |
- EU and EFTA nationals. Article 21 treats nationals of free-movement states as a priority group, so the practical rules differ. Our work permit guide covers them.
- Swiss graduates. Foreign graduates of a Swiss university can be admitted as an exception if their work is of high scientific or economic interest. They are admitted for six months after finishing their studies to find matching work (Art. 21(3) AIG).
- Timing. Quotas are set each year, and the 2027 numbers were not published when we wrote this. Check the Federal Council's November decision and the State Secretariat for Migration. We found no source for permit processing times, so we give none. Ask any employer who files the permit application and when.
3. Step 2: know who is hiring
Banks are one part of finance. Asset managers, insurers, fintech and crypto firms hire too. Our Swiss finance CV guide covers private banking, asset management, investment banking and M&A, compliance and crypto roles, with ATS keywords. For banks, the SBA categories give the hiring signal:
| Category | Hiring signal in the 2026 data |
|---|---|
| Big banks (one group since 2023) | Headcount fell in 2025, and the whole fall of 2,345 full-time equivalents came from this category. |
| Cantonal, Raiffeisen, regional and savings, stock exchange, foreign-controlled banks and private bankers | Each recorded an increase in headcount in 2025. |
| Foreign-controlled banks | Almost 100 banks, more than 16,000 employees. |
How these categories differ is explained in our guide to how Swiss banks work.
4. Step 3: build and run the application
These steps are our suggestions. They are not rules from a source.
- Fix the permit question first. Know your route before you apply, and say so in your cover letter if it affects the start date.
- Prepare a Swiss-format dossier. Use the Swiss finance CV guide for the CV, the Arbeitszeugnis question and cover letters. The CV Optimizer rewrites a CV for the Swiss format and has a free preview.
- Apply across categories. Use the career pages of the institutions in step 2, recruiters and LinkedIn. Include cantonal, private and foreign-controlled banks as well as the biggest names, because the data points to hiring outside the big bank.
- Prepare your salary expectations with data. See our salary guide by role, the CFO and finance salary guide and the Salary Calculator.
- Allow for a longer search. Unemployment in banking is above the national average (SBA, citing SECO), so competition for each opening is likely to be tougher than in a growing market. We have no source for a typical search length, so we give none.
FAQ
Is the Swiss banking job market growing?
It was mixed in 2025. Banks in Switzerland employed 92,002 full-time equivalents at the end of 2025, down 2.5% from 2024, and the fall came entirely from the big banks. All other bank categories added jobs. Domestic headcount fell a further 1.4% in the first half of 2026, according to the Swiss Bankers Association.
Do I need a work permit for a finance job in Switzerland?
It depends on your nationality. Under Article 21 of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act, a non-EU/EFTA worker can be admitted only if no suitable domestic worker or national of a free-movement state is found. EU and EFTA nationals follow different rules, which our work permit guide covers.
How many permits are available for non-EU workers in 2026?
The Federal Council set 8,500 for third-country workers and specialists: 4,500 B permits and 4,000 L permits. The United Kingdom has a separate quota of 3,500: 2,100 B and 1,400 L. By the end of September 2025 about 52% and 17% of those numbers had been used.
Can I stay in Switzerland after graduating to look for work?
Foreign graduates of a Swiss university can be admitted as an exception if their work is of high scientific or economic interest. They are admitted for six months after finishing their studies to find matching work (Article 21, paragraph 3).
Where do the bank headcount figures come from?
From the Swiss Bankers Association Banking Barometer 2026, published in August 2026, which uses SNB statistics and SECO unemployment data, plus the SBA's own employment survey for the first half of 2026.
Does this guide list vacancies or salaries?
